When I was a young lad in my senior year of high school from 2023-2024, I was the Senior Representative in my school's student government. During that time, I took it upon myself to create videos to advertise and market the school's events and fundraisers. These videos were then posted on the school's Instagram page and presented to classes!
As a note, these videos aren't exactly the highest quality, the footage is all shot on a phone and the editing is pretty shifty with cheesy effects. Now, you may ask, why is that? Well, that's my marketing trick: I know audiences and what will attract them; in this instance, my audience is high school teenagers who hate seeing generic professional ads; there's nothing that pulls them in or sparks interest. But if they see the infamous Malachi Choi doing dumb stuff with dumb editing? They're going to love it.
I had people say "that's the guy from the videos!" They even asked for autographs.
This was my first video where I took it upon myself to make an advertisement video for a school event, in this instance, our school was having a "spirit week" where students were encouraged to dress up or do a certain action on different days of the week to celebrate Valentine's Day.
This video was shot in my hallway on my Samsung Galaxy S10, I realized that with limited resources and the non-seriousness of this spirit week, I should play into that and be non-serious. So I did dumb skits like the helmet breaking (however it actually did break), throwing the flower, and wearing a horrible outfit.
While incredibly corny, this is my personal favorite video I've made for my high school. I had the privilege of being one of three chairmen for the creation of our school's Spring Formal; my job was to create the theme and decorations.
As a creator of the event, I knew I had to make a fantastic advertisement.
I introduced many new factors into this video that I hadn't used last time. Instead of using my phone camera, I used my computer webcam with a greenscreen. To be more clear in my message, I used a Logitech Rockband microphone instead of my phone microphone, and I also added music and fun filters.
The video had an intriguing hook for my audience. I used my cute, derpy-looking dog to keep viewers interested. Then, I continued on to give information about the formal and ended it with an inspirational message for people who may have been conflicted about going to the formal.
I was told that this year's Spring Formal had done better than any other school event (besides Prom) in the previous years. I take full credit for that.
The video's aim was to advertise our school's upcoming Prom. The creation of this video introduced many factors for me.
Instead of simply stating the information about the event, this video had a storyline to convey the information, which was new to me; since our Proms theme was based on the painting "Starry Night" by Van Gogh, I had the idea of being sucked into the painting while exploring an odd mystical museum.
This video was also my first time creating one with more people than myself.
Like the other videos, the editing is shoddy and cheesy, but it proved to be a good advertisement.
